DECC Clears The Air On Feed In Tariff Rate
The Governments Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) last week made an announcement to finally provide a little more clarity to the public over the fate of the solar power feed in tariff (FiT).
The Feed In Tariff scheme, which allows members of the public with solar panels on their roofs to ‘sell’ excess energy they make back to the national grid in return for a secured cash payment over a set number of years was originally due to provide those involved with 43.3 pence per kilowatt hour of energy provided to the grid, but then it was announced that this amount would be lower, in line with across the board government budget cuts.
Instead of this, the DECC want the rate changing to 21p per kilowatt hour of energy, so as to save money, which they claim will amount to £100m per year, and £1.5bn over the liftime of the tariff. They are currently battling it out in a court of appeal to get this change pushed through, and a contingency plan is in place so that the 21p rate will be in effect from April, an amount which customers will be given for the next 25 years. Should they lose however, the 43p rate will be used, although in the DECC’s words only “for a very short time”.
Despite the confusion and rate changes over the FiT, we still highly recommend this scheme, which allows you to generate your very own, environmentally friendly energy, and then make a prolonged income off of the back of it, something which I’m sure we can all appreciate.
