Insulation In Summer – What Difference Does it Make?

by | Feb 18, 2022 | News | 0 comments

Brits do love the summer, but the truth is hot weather isn’t something that have to consider all that often – central heating and slippers get a lot more work here than the sprinklers and BBQ!

For those few weeks of the year that we do get the soaring temperatures though, we’re often wholly unprepared, steadily sweltering in overheated homes whilst desperately buying fans and weighing up whether air con is a worthwhile purchase.

So just why does your home get so hot when the sun is out? Well, the answer could be the same reason your property is so cold in the winter – a lack of insulation.

Most of the time when we talk about insulation we’re talking about staying warm and keeping the heat in, and so some people may think that insulation can make the summer sweats worse – but the truth is actually the complete opposite!

Home insulation is actually just as good of a solution for keeping cool in summer as it is for keeping warm in the winter.

How Does Insulation Work in Hot Weather?

Home insulation not only keeps heat inside during winter – it keeps heat out in summer.

When the sun is shining intensely on your roof all day, your lofts get very hot, with temperatures often exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. If your loft isn’t properly insulated, this heat is then free to spread into other parts of your home – one of the reasons why bedrooms and the upstairs of the house always seem worse on those hot days.

Proper loft insulation creates a thermal barrier to this heat, reducing the amount that can spread down and into the rest of your home and helping to keep your bedrooms and the rest of the house comfortable.

Think of it like this –

  • In winter, the heat comes from within the home, and the insulation provides a barrier to stop it from escaping
  • In summer, the heat comes from outside the home, and the insulation provides a barrier to stop as much from getting in

Overall, keeping your home properly insulated is great for temperature management regardless of what the weather is outside.
