Westville Case Study:

Solar Energy In Nottingham for NCCHS

The Project.

Nottingham City Council Housing Services are raising the energy efficiency of residents’ homes to EPC grade C, which therefore is saving money on household energy costs.

Working in partnership with Westville, 124 Nottingham properties were selected to have solar panels installed in 2024/25, under the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund.

Challenges.

Each installation was completed in 2 days keeping resident disruption to a minimum, with scaffolding usually erected and dismantled within a week.

Special attention was given to local birdlife and potential nesting areas. Once the solar panels were fitted, bird netting was secured to them to prevent birds from nesting underneath.

Results.

The installation proved particularly impactful for the many bungalows occupied by senior residents. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with homeowners expressing how pleased they are with their new solar panels and the noticeable reduction in their monthly energy bills.

Beyond the financial savings, residents have also commented on the reassurance of producing their own renewable energy, helping to make their homes warmer, more efficient, and future-ready. The scheme has not only improved comfort and affordability but has also supported a stronger sense of energy independence and sustainability within the community.

Following the work in Allenton, residents are set to save an estimated £74,250 annually on their energy bills.*

Following the work done in the SHDF project, the total estimated energy bill savings amounted to around £580 per year for each property!* The solar installation will save over roughly £72,000 collectively each year.
