Westville Case Study:

Whole-house energy upgrade with Architect Gil Schalom in West Bridgford

The Project.

Located in West Bridgford, this impressive home renovation showcases the benefits of combining architectural vision with expert insulation installation. Designed and managed by architect Gil Schalom, the project was completed across two key phases, first improving internal comfort and then extending energy efficiency throughout the entire property.

The initial works in 2012 focused on the rear wing, upgrading thermal performance through the installation of internal wall insulation, 300mm loft insulation, an airtightness membrane beneath the suspended floor, and high performance insulation around window reveals. The results were immediate, transforming the area into the warmest and most comfortable part of the home.

Phase 2 took place in 2024–2025 working on the property exterior for which Westville delivered a full external wall insulation system. For maximum efficiency, 200mm insulation boards were used where possible and 100mm boards where space was restricted.

It was necessary to excavate for below ground insulation, adjust the drainage, add insulated fascias and soffits, plus reset the timber windows to optimise performance. A replacement flat roof was added to the front bay to interface seamlessly with the EWI and a decorative timber lattice feature, replicating the original one, was installed on the gable over the EWI.

The Challenges.

Working around an existing, high-quality property required exceptional care and attention to detail. Tight driveways on either side meant insulation thickness had to be carefully adjusted to maintain access while ensuring full coverage.

Each window and feature was individually detailed to eliminate cold bridging and preserve the architectural character. Coordination with the architect ensured every modification, from drainage adjustments to roof overhang extensions, was executed seamlessly and without compromise.
