UK Net Zero Plan Changes Coming

by | Jul 22, 2022 | Environment, News | 0 comments

Changes are coming to the Government’s “Net Zero” climate plan after the High Court ruled that it is inadequate and unlawful,

This comes following a successful legal challenge from a coalition of environmental groups, including Friends of the Earth, the Good Law Project, and Client Earth.

The judge ruled that the plan – published just before the Glasgow COP26 event – is “too vague”, meaning that there were no actual assurances that the aims to decarbonise the UK economy by 2050 would actually be met.

As such, the plan will now have to be extended and fleshed out within the next 8 months, providing more clear action and firm targets to be met.

It’s not yet clear what this will mean, and what additional measures will be added to the plan, however coming at a time of rising fuel bills and record temperatures, we hope to see a much stronger plan to help tackle both of these issues.

The average UK family has seen their energy bills soar over the past 12 months, with further price rises expected in the autumn, so real action is needed to bring this situation under control. With more of the country’s building stock still energy inefficient and lacking measures such as basic insulation, a drive to fix this would be the perfect place to start. Insulating a property can cut energy bills by over £500 per year, whilst cutting carbon emissions at the same time.

We shall be watching the changes to the climate plan closely, and hopefully, we can see some robust action to help real families very soon.

Did you know: If you live in Amber Valley Borough, Bassetlaw District, Derbyshire Dales District, Mansfield District or South Derbyshire District Councils and earn less than £30,000 per year, you may be eligible for FREE insulation – click here to find out more.
